FRENCH SAILORS FOR AKAROA

Visit By Frigate Next Month French sailors will steam into Akaroa harbour on December 14 to visit the cemetery of the old French naval base and conduct a ceremony there. They will arrive in the 2172-ton French naval frigate Francis Garnier, a slooptype vessel which France acquired from Italy after the war under the terms of the Peace Treaty. She has a peace-time complement of 184, and Admiral Martinet, Commander-in-Chief of the French forces in the Pacific, will be aboard when she berths at Akaroa. The Francis Gamier, described by H.M.N.ZS. Pegasus as a dispatch vessel, is due at Auckland on December 2. She will call at Wellington on December 11. The ship is expected to berth at Akaroa at 8 a.m. on December 4, and leave again for Dunedin at 8 pm. the same day. She will call at Bluff and the Milford Sounds before leaving for New Caledonia. I Four Hanged.— Four Africans found guilty of the murder of London-born Mrs Lillian Burton, aged 39, on the Rhodesian Copperbelt in May last year were hanged at Livingstone central prison yesterday.
