Vehicle Authority For Drilling Company

An application for a vehicle authority to carry drilling plant and equipment, pipes and oil fuel by Owen Morton Jenkins and Herman Schiphorst. trading as the Well Drilling and Exploration Company, has been granted by the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr j. S. Haywood) in a reserved decision.

The company applied on October 24 for a new continuous goods service with one vehicle authority to allow carriage of its equipment in the South Island, and also for exemption from the 40-mile railway restriction., Mr J. A. Bretherton appeared for the company, and the application was opposed by the Railways Department (Mr L. C. Brown).

"It appears to me that this firm, in its work of testing' and boring, provides a most essential service with respect to water supply and foundations throughout the South Island,” Mr Haywood says in his decision. “The evidence satisfies me that the itinerant nature of the service, considered in conjunction with the localities served and the small amounts of pipe or oil fuel involved, justifies the relief sought from railways restriction.” The vehicle authority was granted provided the vehicle did not exceed five tons and a half gross laden weight Two continuous goods service licences, each with two vehicle authorities, in the name of B. Hooking. Ltd.,

were suspended, no objection having been received. A continuous taxi service licence in the name of Peter Jackson was revoked as from September 14, no objections having been received. An application by Edwin Henry Boyce (Mr H. W Hunter) for an additional vehicle authority to be used in the South Island to carry frozen goods with exemption from the rail restriction, was granted in a reserved decision.

Another part of the same application, permitting Boyce to carry frozen foods in the Buller, Grey and Westland counties, was approved on October 26.
