National Rose Show Opens In City

About 400 persons were welcomed by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) to the combined show of the National Rose and Canterbury Horticultural Societies at the Durham Street Art Gallery yesterday.

The show was a wonderful realisation of the efforts of many persons with a common purpose and also presented tangible evidence of results of man's co-operation with nature, said Mr Manning. “I hope all the citizens of Christchurch will take the opportunity of seeing such a splendid display.” he said. Three hundred persons from other areas are in Christchurch for the national rose convention and show, which drew entries from as far north as Auckland. Fine Standard

In spite of adverse weather recently, which had affected the number and quality of entries in some sections, the general standard of the shows was outstanding especially the decorative sections, said the president of the Canterbury Horticultural Society (Mr J. C. Fraser). The latest varieties of hybrid roses and florabunda were on display, flown from Auckland yesterday morning. These attracted considerable interest as did a display of between 40 and 50 miniature roses, presented by Mr W. R. Bestinan, of Christchurch. Four species of miniature roses, Yellow Bantam, Sunbeam, Miss Muffett and Willie Winkie, all imported from California, were displayed for the first time in Christchurch and probably in New Zealand.

The advances made towards the hybridising of a blue rose were noticeable, said the president of the Canterbury Rose Society (Mr G. N. Sheldon). In several entries flowers of tope. buff, and lavendar were exhibited and mauve roses, of the silver lining variety, exhibited by Mr H. Wyles, of Christchurch, showed particular advancement in this field.

There were more than 1000 roses in the combined show. In the horticultural society’s section the decorative and vegetable classes had increased on last year though the weather had been detrimental to the special classes, said Mr Sheldon. Results were:—
