Men Flown To Byrd Station
All eight men aboard a United States Navy DC3 which had a landing mishap in the Sentinel mountain range in Ellsworth Land, Antarctica. on Sunday, were evacuated to Byrd station on Tuesday. No reports have been received at Harewood to indicate what is to happen to the crippled Dakota. Included in the eight were the three field investigators from the University of Minnesota, who were to have established a field camp in the vicinity of the Sentinel range. The scientist* were brought out when it was found that their radio transmitter was out of order. As soon as the transmitter has been repaired the men will once again leave Byrd station for the 450-mile flight to the field area in which they are to work. The evacuation wa* made in a second ski-equipped Dakota from Byrd station which got the men back to
the station at 9.19 p.m. on Tuesday. The original Dakota's wing was damaged when the starboard landing gear collapsed on hitting against hard, high sastrugi while landing.
