FOUR NEW CHAIRS IN ENGINEERING Monash University opened in March, 1961. with 300 first-year students in five Faculties (Arts, Economics and Politics. Science. Medicine, and Engineering) and expects to have about 8000 fulltime students by 1968, including some 700-900 in Engineering. While the University appreciates the need to satisfy current requirements for professionally orientated courses in chemical, civil, eiectrical and mechanical engineering, it wishes to integrate more closely the courses leading to its first degrees, while providing facilities for specialisation for higher degrees and for research. The Engineering buildings. costing some £2,000,000, are accordingly being designed as an integrated unit based on subjects rather than on professional divisions, and the University now wishes to appoint senior staff, sympathetic to this broad policy, to participate. in developing the curriculum and planning the buildings, and also In securing staff and equipment. It is proposed to establish four Chairs in Engineering and to appoint to them during 1962 professors whose interests lie within the general areas of engineering studies broadly described as structures, fluid mechanics, chemical, and electrical engineering.
