MOSSES FOR MUSEUM
Big Collection Of 70 Years Ago
Mosses collected from the New Brighton area when the environment there was manuka scrub are among a large collection of dried specimens of New Zealand and foreign mosses presented to the Canterbury Museum. The collection was made more than 70 years ago by the late Mr T. W. N. Beckett, of Christchurch, and it comprises about 7000 sheets of mounted specimens. “Mr Beckett came to Christchurch from Ceylon in 1883.” said a report to the Museum Trust Board. “He subsequently prepared seven scientific papers on his researches on New Zealand mosses. His collection includes material from many South Island localities now greatly changed by human settler ment. “In addition he built up an almost world-wide collection of specimens mainly sent to him in exchange for New Zealand material.”
