FINED £50
Driver Caused Death In view of the jury’s very strong recommendation for mercy and because of the peculiar circumstances of the accident, he did not think it was a case for imprisonment, said Mr Justice Richmond in the Supreme Court yesterday when imposing a fine of £5O on Albert Keith Burrows. age-d 39, a farmer, of Omihi, who appeared for sentence on a charge of negligent driving causing the death of Samuel James Lee near Amberley on May 8. His Honour ordered Burrows to pay £5O towards the cost of his prosecution and suspended his licence for six months, his licence to be endorsed when the suspension ended. For Burrows, Mr B. McClelland said the cancellation of the prisoner's driving licence itself would be a very great hardship. The prisoner had a substantial farm, was 10 miles from the nearest township and his wife could not drive. The prisoner's work connected with his farm entailed a great deal of driving. He had no previous convictions. Mr C. M. Roper made no submissions for the Grown.
