Admitted To Probation
David Graeme Booth, aged 22, a fire watcher. was placed on probation for two years by Mr Justice Richmond in the Supreme Court yesterday when he appeared for sentence on a charge of receiving 10 pairs of shoes, valued at £35 ss, on June 9. His Honour ordered Booth to pay £5O towards the cost of his prosecution. The jury had recommended mercy, said his Honour. It seemed that Booth was learning his lesson and had kept out of trouble since 1957. His biggest fault appeared to be that be could not stick to a job. His Honour ordered that Booth was not to leave any job without the prior consent of the probation officer. For Booth, Mr P. G. S. Peniington asked the Court to take the view that the prisoner's offence was a stupid and irrational act rather than a planned crime. There seemed to be no reason why the prisoner would want 10 pairs ot women’s shoes. Mr C. M. Roper, for the Crown, asked for an order for the return of the 10 pairs of shoes to tire Railways Department.
