More Patronage, Profit For Tourist Hotels
(New Zealand Press Association)
INVERCARGILL, Nov. 16. While the pressure continued fpr overseas tourists, more activity than before was being directed towards tapping potential markets within New Zealand. The aim was to foster interisland resort exploration in the spring and autumn when there, was plenty of ferry car space, when roads were not crowded and when hotels offered concession tariffs. There were, for instance, more than 40,000 farmers in the North Island and about 20,000 in the South Island, who could travel conveniently at that time of the year, said Mr Colbeck. Similarly, statistics showed that of 70,000 couples married each year, 40,000 chose between May and November for their weddings. The potential was there and the corporation was expanding its honeymoon suites.
The demand, was phenomenal for the further 42 bedrooms with baths at the new Hermitage. Mr Colbeck said holidaymakers had quickly used and proved the case for feeder air links with Milford, and resort-based sightseeing aircraft were another big stimulus. At Milford the Mitre Peak launch was already there and the Anita Bay was to sail there today. The new Pembroke was expected to be at Milford . late next month. Being built in Auckland for about £30,000, she would accommodate up to 100 passengers. The Milford track and the hostels were being prepared for the first track parties. The aim was to attract 2000 walkers this year—about 230 more than during last season.
