RENWICK RACES.—A programme of five races, including the main event, the 62-mile “Renwick 50” road race, was held at Renwick, seven miles from Blenheim, last Saturday. A large crowd braved unpleasant weather to see the races. TOP LEFT: When he was caught with his engine switched off at the start officials hurried forward to push-start M. Stanton’s Stanton Corvette. Stanton soon made up the bad start and did well in the race, coming fourth. The 4640 c.c. car is powered by a rear-mounted Corvette engine and the rear wheels are fitted with bankedtrack tyres similar to drag-racing slicks instead of normal racing tyres. TOP RIGHT: P. Hoare (Ferrari) takes the chequered flag at the end of the 50th lap well ahead of his nearest rival, J. Mansel (Cooper Climax). Hoare lost the lead to Mansel early in the race but regained it soon afterwards and held it to the finish. BOTTOM: K. Macmillan (left) and M. Cottle work on B. J. Cottle’s Lola after it retired from the first race of the day, the event for sports cars, after an oil line parted. The car was ready for the main event and ran perfectly to gain a welldeserved sixth place. Cottle imported the car from England only recently, and it will appear at Teretonga Park, Invercargill, early next year.
