CRICKET India Defends Stubbornly On Last Day Of Test

BOMBAY, Nov. 16 India. needing 295 in 245 minutes to win the first test on the final day of play today after England bad declared its second innings closed before lunch, at 184 for five, had made 128 for one wicket at tea. India thus needed 195 in the last two hours to win. Barrington followed up his first innings of 151 not out with an unbeaten 52 in England's second innings. He has now scored 352 runs on the present tour of India without dismissal. England was tied down by the fast-medium bowlers, Desai and Ranjane. losing two wickets for 20 runs in the first half-hour. Dexter produced two splendid drives off the back foot, but was then caught at midoff by Sardesai, substituting for Jumar. who was unfit. Desai took his first wicket nt the match when he sent Murray’s leg stump flying after England's wicketkeeper had made only two.

Early in India’s second innings, Contractor lofted a catch into the covers. Allen lost the ball at first, but recovered to take a good catch on his knees and elbows. Manjrekar gave a hard chance to Parfitt at backward short-leg off Brown when India's score was 20. But he stayed with Jaisimha until lunch, when India was 26 for one wicket. When he had scored two. Manjrekar completed 2000 runs in test cricket being the fifth Indian to achieve this milestone. Manjrekar batted well. Neither he nor Jaisimha experienced any difficulties against the varied bowling of Dexter, Lock, and Barber As the batsmen settled down, England's chances of forcing a win had almost disappeared. But India was fortunate when Murray missed a possible chance of stumping Jaisimah off BarEngland bowled at the good rate of 20 overs in the first

hour after lunch, but only 45 runs were scored. In spite of that Manjrekar completed the fastest 50 of the match—in 102 minutes. Jaisimah rarely attacked, and with two hours left, India needed 195 to win. Manjrekar and Jaisimha began to chase the runs but they did not come quickly, and it was obvious at tea that the match would be drawn.
