SCHOOL FOR BLIND

Govt. Defers Project

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 16. The Cabinet has decided to defer the construction of Homai College, in which the New Zealand Foundation for the Blind hoped to house and train 100 blind children. The Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) has advised the board of trustees that over-commitment of the building industry and the financial difficulties being experienced by the Govern* ment have made the deferment necessary. Mr E. W. Christiansen, director of the foundation, said today that the board of trustees was keenly disappointed at the decision. He said the accommodation problem at the foundation’s headquarters in Parnell was so serious that the board might have to refuse admission to any more blind children. •‘The foundation in 1951-52 raised £360,000 for welfare, and successive Governments have promised a subsidy of not less than £1 for £1 to enable a college to be built,’' - he said. “The plans, specifications and quantity survey were finished months ago.”
