Control Of Harbour Beaches

Sir.— A recent walk along the beaches of Charteris Bay has convinced me that the numerous complaints about obstructions on the foreshore are fully justified. Apparently there is no control over what is erected on the “crown chein.” and the lines of slipways and boat-houses make it impossible to walk along the foreshore in many places. Why a few boat-owners are allowed to monopolise these popular picnic beaches is beyond comprehension. I would suggest that representatives of the Marine Department,

the Harbour Board, and the local council should inspect these beaches and formulate some policy of . control before they are completely ruined for the public.—Yours, etc., SPECTATOR. November 13, 1961.

[The secratairy-manager of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr A. L. Burk) said: ‘‘lt is the policy of the Lyttelton Harbour Board to provide facilities for owners of small craft. Periodical visits are paid to the bays by members of the board and regular visits by members of the staff of the resident engineer end harbourmaster. Die Harbour Board has no jur-isdrotion over the ‘Queen’s Chain’.”]
