Secret Hoard In Paddock

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. IS. A box of about 70 sticks of gelignite, and about 500 detonators were found by the police in a Merton road, Glen Innes, paddock yesterday. Some of the gelignite had reached the dangerous liquefying stage, when nitro-giy-cerine forms. The detonators, some already clamped to fuses, were piled carelessly together. The material could have caused a major blast had anyone found the hoard and handled it carelessly, said detectives. Children often play in the area where the hoard was found. The cache, the biggest in Auckland's police hiatoey, wa* discovered under a clump at gone by Detective R. I. Chadwick, of the shop-breaking squad. An inspection this morning showed that the liquefaction was more advanced than at first thought, and an expert will diapase of the explosive*. A senior police officer said: “There’s enough gelignite here to blow up every safe .in Auckland.”
