Around The Greens

An unexpected result in the Mona Vale club’s competitions was the defeat of last year’s champion - of - champions pair. M. Ellis and M. Briggs, after a hard-fought game, by K. Shivas and B. Jordan. However, Ellis and Briggs have one life left and the final result is still in doubt.

The Opawa club has been unfortunate in the death of eight members including Mr A. Ternant. who was club patron for a number of years. Mr A. T. Blackwell has been appointed new patron. Among the 13 new members who have recently joined the dub is J. Peake, past president of the Mentone club in Melbourne and F. French, who is on transfer from Blenheim, and is showing excellent form as a second year colt. Thanks to the efforts of the president of the Christchurch centre 'Mr F. W. Larcombe) and his committee the extension of the new pavilion is completed and will be a valuable asset to the club in the forthcoming Dominion tournament.

C. Wilson and H. Hartley were successful in a close match with S. Whiteford and L. Tilley in the St. Albans club’s pairs championships, and it was only on the last head that Hartley clinched the game. P. Gardiner played steady bowls to take W. Bell’s first life and if he can maintain his present form he should do well.

After the care and atten. tion the green supervisor of the Mena Vale dub, Mr E. Seiwood, has given to the green, it should be at its very best for the Dominion championships in January.

During the winter dub members extended the pavilion and erected a breakwind. Cub ties are well underway at tine St. Albans dub with the first round matches to be completed at the weekend. Some great tussles have taken place. Perhaps the fours game between Robinson and Cogswell was the most interesting. In spite ot Cogswell's gaining a much needed six towards the end of the match, it was not sufficient, and Robinson's rink scored a well-deserved victory. Cameron's and Bell’s fours fought out their match point for point until the final rink where Bell won by a very narrow margin. The “front” men of Vinton's rink were outplayed in their contest with a four skipped by Edmond, the latter running out a comfortable winner.

Championship games in the RJS.A. club are well under way and are expected to be completed by Christmas. In the pairs Hoy and Nottingham are unbeaten after three rounds. A fine match in the pairs championship was seen at the Fendalton green recently, between H. W. Wilson and Dailey (skip) and T. A. Leitch and C. C. Holland (skip). Dailey took an early lead only to see Holland and Leitch, with some very good bowling, go to a 17-10 lead with five ends to go. On winning the kitty, Wilson and Dailey threw long heads and at the 20th head led by one. Holland, then six down, played his last bowl and saved the game by drawing the shot. On the last end he again drew a splendid toucher to be one up. However, Dailey played a yard on shot, connected and took the shot in a most exciting game.

In the opening round of the Shirley club’s singles competition M. Natty, last year’s champion, scraped home against J. Darlson a third year player, 19-18. J. O. Thompson and selector A. Ellingford, always a strong pair, fell In the first round of the pairs to two of the club’s official umpires. S. L. Eyre and E. Stevens. Another pair to be eliminated early was the Dominion championship combination of Hunter and G. Young, to M. Woods and D. Robertson.
