ARCHBISHOP EZEKIEL

Visit To City On Sunday

Archbishop Ezekiel Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church In Australia and New Zealand, will arrive in Christchurch on Sunday. He will conduct a service in the Greek Orthodox Church in Christcburcta (formerly St David’s Angtiean Church in St. Albans) on Sunday, and will meet Christchurch clergy and ministers from other churches on Monday. Members of the Greek Orthodox Church in the South Island now number 60 families, about 50 of whom live in Christchurch. The church in St Albans was bought from the Anglican Church in May of this year, and is being adapted to traditional Byzantine style. Services are conducted every six weeks when the priest (Father Dimitri) comes from Wellington. The Christchurch Greek community hopes to have its own priest. Ten years ago there were only seven Greek families in the South Island. Greek girls who have married New Zealanders and immigrants have swollen the numbers. The Greeks here now come from Rumania, Greece, Cyprus, and America. They all speak Greek.

It will be the first service Archbishop Ezekiel has conducted in a Greek Orthodox church in the South Island.
