FLIGHTS TO McMURDO

62nd Trip Today

The sixty-second round trip flight to be flown between Christchurch and McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, by Globemasters of the United States Air Force will begin today. The final flight—the seventieth—is expected to take place on November 24. Already tentative dates and flight times have been worked for the departure from Harewood of the aircraft and men of the 9th Troop Carrier Squadron. Four of the nine Globemasters will leave for the United States daily, beginning on Saturday. The four aircraft are expected to carry about 170 men. The fifth and sixth flights home will carry mainly cargo and the remaining three another 170 or more servicemen.

The Globemasters, which before returning to the United States are to go to the Antarctic once more to make the six airdrops at Sky-Hi station in Ellsworth Land, near the Sentinel mountain range, are due to leave Harewood on Saturday. Weather permitting the drops will be made the following day. The cargo to be air-dropped includes fuel, rations, and automotive parts. This will be retrieved by a traverse party from the University of Wisconsin.
