Girl Saves Friend From Drowning

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Nov. 15. A grateful mother, Mrs H. C. Woolston, today praised an 11-year-old girl, Yvonne Lapwood, for saving the life of her 13-year-old daughter on Saturday. Mrs Woolston’s daughter, Janice, was narrowly saved from drowning by the quick action of her friend. The two girls were playing with their respective younger sisters beside a deep bush

creek flowing through a property on the Run road, some miles west of Wellsford. Janice Woolston slipped into deep water, and immediately got into difficulties. The other girls tried to reach her with sticks from the bank, but were unable to do so. None of the four could swim, but Yvonne attempted a rescue by diving in and gliding. She seized a branch on the other side of the creek with one hand and Janice’s hair with the Other, and managed to pull the semi-conscious girl to the bank. Janice, who was In an exhausted state, and suffering from shock, had mouth-to-mouth resuscitation applied by her sister Shirley, aged 12.
