Course

More than 60 trainee Instructor representing 30 North bland club*. gathered at Mount Ruapehu recently to attend a basic instruction course on elimbing and mounteireering. They were coached by seven leading instructors from Christchurch, fore of whom have had overseas experience, either on the Himalayas or the European Alp*.

The course, conducted by the Federated Mountaineerfog Club*, included belays on snow and ice, step chopping, checking falls from a fixed belay, the importance Of the Tarbuck knot in its relationship to nylon rope, and talk* on equipment and techniques. Part of the second day was spent on various aspect* of roek climbing. At Easter, the New Zealand Alpine Club, at the request ot the FIM.C., will conduct an advanced course for a limited number of instructor* at Crow Hut, Arthur’s Pass.
