Electrical Trades Union

Sir, —As reported in “The Press” today, the E.T.U. has at last jettisoned Communist control after the High Court case in which its chief officers were convicted of ballotrigging and conspiracy. NonCommunists now hold office in the ratio of 9 to 2. To anyone who followed the case in the English newspapers this development is satisfactory, for the E.T.U.’s nuisance value was almost unlimited, and though it was expelled by the T.U.C. the continuance of Communist control could have been mischievous. Judging from the quality of New Zealand Communist opinions which appear from time to time in this column there would appear to be little danger of its being a menace to our economy; but the fact that the costs in the above-mentioned ease were some £BO,OOO, which would have to be found from pockets more able to sustain them than those of the defendants, may deter ambitious trade unionists with Communist inclinations in this country from following the former practices of the E.T.U.—Yours, etc, I. TREW. November 14, 1961.
