Assistance For Farmers

Sir, —Everybody knows that a healthy farming industry means a prosperous time for all. What everybody doesn’t know is the present state of the industry; falling priees and rising costs are slowing it down and action should be taken now to prevent a worsening of the situation. As many of our industries are subsidised in some form or another surely it would not be unreasonable to subsidise farming for the ultimate good of all sections of the community. If the present subsidies on food were gradually transferred to superphosphate for top-dressing I suggest it would be a sound and profitable investment. Anyone reading the article in Friday’s issue by the chairman of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council advisory committee on the striking increases through aerial top dressing cannot fail to be impressed.—Yours, etc, SUPER FARMER. November 13,1061.
