U.S. Diplomat’s Death

(K.Z.P.A. -Reuter— Copyright) WASHINGTON. Nov. 13. The United States Ambassador to Spain, Mr Anthony J. Drexel Biddle, died in hospital at Washington today. Mr Biddle, who was 84, had been suffering from lung cancer. But a spokesman at Walter Reed Army Medical Centre attributed death to a heart attack. Mr Biddle came from a noted Philadelphia family but he turned from society, business and sports to diplomacy. He was known as one of the world’s best-dressed men, the Asociated Press said. He became known as the ■ ‘ multiple diplomat ” when President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him ambassador to seven govermnente-in-exile in London during World War 11. Mr Biddle mastered the languages ot most of the exile groups to which he was assigned—Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Jugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Greece and Norway. - - Mr Biddite was Ambassador

to Poland when Germany’s attack on that country set off World War 11. He and his family joined officials of the Polish Government in a long and dangerous flight to Rumania. Mr Biddle was credited with helping 9000 Americans escape from Europe.
