U lnfluence Of Russians’’ f.V.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Nov. 14. Japanese fishermen have been operating in New Zealand waters recently largely because of Russian influence. Mr G. E. Melville said in Dunedin today. "Because the Russians are fishing most of the sea that surrounds Japan, the Japanese are obliged io do their fishing elsewhere if they do not wish to start a war with the Communists.” he told the Dunedin Optimists’ Club. Mr Melville recently returned from a Rotary conference in Japan where he spent several weeks. He said that rather than argue with the Russians and possibly start a war. the Japanese preferred to leave the Russian fishing fleets rlone and do their own fishing elsewhere. "This is typical of their confidence in the principles of democracy.” he said. Further proof of this was that Japan had ignored the markets of China and Soviet Russia in an attempt to keep the country’s trade confined to the free world. Mr Melville said even now 'he Japanese were looking towards the European Economic Community for markets for the country's exports.
