POLITICAL LINK IN SIX
‘Test Of U.K. Sincerity’
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, November 14. The “Financial Times” today suggested that the recent French proposals for a closer political link between the six countries of the European Common .Market might have been prompted by a desire to test Britain’s sincerity in applying to join the community. The “Financial Times’’ suggested that there was a “superficial difference of approach between Britain and the Six.”
“The Six think first of the community as a political construction,” the “Financial Times” said. “In Britain, the case for joining in the community is usually argued in econominc terms
“Given this difference there is a constant risk that Britain’s motives will be mis-
construed—-that we shall be suspected of wanting once again to share the economic fruits of close association without making the political sacrifices.
“It may be that the French objective, in drawing up a draft treaty of political union at this time, was simply to test Britain’s sincerity,” the newspaper said.
