RANGOON RIOTS

Four Die In Shooting

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) RANGOON, Nov. 14. Four people were shot dead and 20 injured as 2006 Buddhists led by 200 monks clashed with police in Rangoon today. Rioters burned down two Moslem mosques in Okkalapa, a suburban settlement for labourers, shouting “Down with Moslems. Bum their houses of prayer,” agencies reported. Monks had repeatedly protested at the building of more mosques in Okkalapa. Police at first tried to disperse the crowd with tear gas, but then opened fire. Hospital officials said four people were killed and 20 injured in the riot. Early today police cordoned off the riot area and made a house-to-house search.

They arrested 70 monks and 200 other people suspected of having taken an active part in the rioting.
