Unlucky Runner

One of the unluckiest athlete* this season in Canterbury is G. Pyne, who transferred to Christchurch from Wellington at the beginning Of the year. Holder of the Naw Zealand junior two-mile record of 9min 9.4*ec, Pyne will not be eligible for the national junior titles this season as he will turn 19, and thus become • senior, on March 2, th* opening day of the junior championship meeting.

During the season Pyne hopes his programme will enable him to improve on some of the existing junior record*. Although it is likely he will be stationed in the Wellington area after completing hi* course at the Christchurch Teachers’ College next year, Pyne hope* he may be able to arrange to remain in Canterbury, where stronger competition is available. Pyne, whose home is in Blenheim, is coached by a former junior national mile champion, D. Karl, a physical education instructor at Woodbourne, who formerly trained under A. L. Lydiard.
