ATHLETICS Miss Chamberlain Again Breaks 880-Yard Record

• class half-mile by Miss Marise Chamberlain; a provincial -20 yards time by A. Steel; a number of Canterbury records m the under age groups; and improving performances in grades marked Saturday's inter-club athletic meeting at Rugby Park as the best of the season and favourably impressed the Auckland coach, Mr A. L. Lydiard, with the standard of Canterbury athletics.

Again running virtually a solo race. Miss Chamberlain shattered her own national half mile record with a time of 2min B.lsec, which puts her among the top ranked women at the distance in the world. The time took 2.3 sec off the record Miss Chamberlain set only a fortnight ago. Since the end of the prex ous season she has reduced the record by 3.7 sec. Not all the records will go on the books, however, as in the case of Steel's run the timekeepers were unable to see the flash from the gun while wind assistance will prevent 'Jhe recognition of st least one other performance With the Empire Games being held at Perth next November. Miss Chamberlain's coach, Mr V. Briedis. decided she should attempt records at this stage of the present season as an experiment to ensure that she wiU be able to reach her best for the Games. As Miss Chamberlain is only now beginning her sharpening up programme, Mr Briedis is confident. . provided conditions remain favourable. that she will make even further improvement during the season. While Mr Lydiard would have preferred to see Miss Chamberlain making her attempts later in the season, Mr Briedis said this policy had been followed last year, when Miss Chamberlain had been unfortunate to strike a series of unsuitable conditions. Miss Chamberlain ran the first 220 yards in just outside 29sec. the quarter-mile in (52sec, and the 660 yards in Imin 34sec. The performance was a remarkable one considering Miss Chamberlain led from the start and had to contend with a strong nor’west wind. In matches against top Australian athletes. Miss Chamberlain has shown an excellent competitive temperament and. given the stimulus of strong opponents, she should improve her time still more. Miss Chamberlain showed she is regaining much of the speed she had when she favoured the shorter distances. In the 220 yards she took first place with 25.35ec, compared with her provincial record of 24.55ec and in talcinc second place in the 75 yards she was credited with-the same time as-the winner, Miss L. Anderson—89sec. No Flash It is regrettable that for the second week in succession a a print record should have to be cisallowed because the timekeepers could not see the flash of the starter’s gun. Making his first appearance in scratch racing this season. Steel raced through the senior A 220 yards in 21.5 sec to beat the provincial record, set by the Empire Games representative. D. R. Batten, in 1949. by o.3sec Steel is in superb form after following a toughening-up procramme of training on the sandhills at Woodend beach in recent week-ends. While naturally disappointed at being disallowed the record he was optimistic -bout the matter, saying that if he had done the time once he was confident he could do it again Earlier in the meeting Steel recorded the fastest time. 7 Bsec. in a series of senior post-entry 75 yards. His time was o.3sec better than the next best section time. Under 15 Sprints The under 15 sprinters were In fine form with two of them being credited with times in the 100 yards that bettered the standard set for record qualification. Although R Stevenson was credited with llsec. wind assistance will prevent him being credited with the record, which will go to J. Ed,vvean. who returned lllsec in his heat. Another under 15 performance to qualify as a record was a 56.65ec effort for the 440 yards by E. Fearon who beat the standard of 57sec. The under 14 girls shared in the record breaking, too. V. Gilmour qualified with a 15ft lin long jump and J Oakley with a 9 3sec 75 yards. Distance Races After some fine road racing during the winter, including a record-breaking 12-raile KaiapoiChristchurch run. R Stevens showed he has not lost any of his speed over the shorter dis*nces In the senior three miles he returned one of his best times to win in 14min 23.25ec after slipping the field in the middle stages Another good distance time was that of a 15-year-old. C. McFadden, in the under-17 mile, in which he recorded 4min 485 sec. This compared very favourable- with the junior time of 4min 30 Bsec by A Bayard. A good early season effort in the junior field events was made by G. Fullerton whth a throw of 144 ft ssin with the 121 b hammer. This distance was onlv 12 feet short of the Canterbury record set bv A. Fuller in 1948 In the junior high jump M

Grace had the satisfaction of beating the height gained by the seniors. Grace won the junior event with sft 9in. one inch better than A. Harbott in the senior contest.
