Second Medical School “An Urgent Necessity”
(New Zeeland Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Nov. 7. Mr H. S. Kenrick, the recently retired superintendent-in-chief of the Auckland Hospital Board, considers that the establishment of a second medical school in Auckland is “an rrgent necessity” that should not be viewed in any spirit of parochialism. “Both Auckland and Dunedin should work together for the benefit of the country as a whole," he said today. “It is to be hoped that both the Government and the University Grants Committee appreciate the urgent need of setting up r tcond school in Auckland as soon as possible’ Mr Kenrick said he believed a start should be made with temporary buildings to get the school going. Even if temporary buildings were used for the school, it would not be possible to have the first graduates until 19® If permanent buildings had to be erected, it would be veil into the 1970 s before any Auckland graduate would appear o~ the medical sccdc. **Th< establishment of a school in Auckland would
not detrimentally affect the Otago school,” said Mr Kenrick. It would be advantageous to both Otago and a newly established Auckland school if Otago's intake into the second reademic year could be reduced from 120 to approximately 80. leaving the balance to be trained in Auckland. “This division would permit still more concentrated and individual instruction to be given at Otago," be said. “And there should be no difficulty in fitting, say, 50 places a year in the Auckland school.”
