High Standard Of Stock At Ashburton A. And P. Show

The high standard of the livestock exhibited at the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show on Saturday onee again drew favourable comments from the majority of judges. Entries in most sections were down on last year’s figures, but competition was keen and some outstanding exhibits were on display. W ith much better weather than last year, attendance and gate-taking figures were up, although during the closing stages light rain fell. An estimated crowd of more than 6000 attended and the gate-takings, at £470, were up by about £2O on last year’s show.

A feature of the show was the shearing competition, the district final, and it was followed with vary keen interest throughout. One of the highlights was the moving machinery display in the show ring for about 20 minutes during the middle of the day. It was the first time for two years that a large cross-section of agricultural machinery had been at the show and the parade, which completely filled the ring, was colourful and drew a great deal of interest from the crowd Mrs J. Richards was awarded champion hunter and the beet woman rider of the day. and Mr L. J Dunn the best man rider. Miss J. Lemon, with Pimms. had a very successful day. taking the award for champion hack and reserve champion hunter. Shearing Contest Much interest was taken in the woolhandling and shearing competition soonsored bv the New Zealand Wool Beard, In general the workmanship of the competitors wa« of a high standard. Mr W. I. Johneton, the shearing judge, said that the standard compared favourably with the Ellesmere and North Canterbury shows. The set up of the shearing was praised by Mr Johnston, who is the North Canterbury and assistant South Island shearing instructor for the Wool Board. Some of the competitors were not used to eompeti-

Hob method* of woolhandling. said Mr L. Galloway, one of the judge* of the woolhandling. Throwing of the fleece was one of the weak points, while a few were leaving a bit of belly frib in the fleece. However, the standard over-all was good. Skirting 'of the fleece left something to be desired, said Mr I. S. Miller, the other woolhandling judge. The fault of over skirting was not obvious, but some tended to leave a certain amount of skirting on the fleeee. Some tablehand* were not certain of what constituted a neck, he said. fudges’ Comments Mott judges in the sheep sectiOu were of the opinion that the winning anunaU of the various classes would hold their ?“<, othe J in the South Island, and many could compete with good chance* of •how** in the metropolitan Remnev Marsh—ln both natural and open condition, the Romney ram hoggets had particularly impressed the judge *Mr A. D. McCall, of Gore). Entries in these classes were strong and competition was keen. The champion and reserve champion were well up to the standard expected Of Romney rams, he said. Mr F. Chittock. of Lincoln, judged the Romney ewes and said there was a very good representative class with the majority of th* sheep of good show standard. The winning sheep were very pleasing, he said. Some of the ewes were spoilt by low tail settings and some could have been much stronger in the head. Corriedale*. The winning Corriedale* would certainly hold their own tn the metropolitan

show in Christchurch, and th* winning ram hogget was parkart) said. They showed true Corrtedal* conformation, but he was disappointed that in a district such aa Ashburton, there were not more of the outstandMr&.°Lfc> b n rM th * Merinos—The Merinos were as good as any, outside of those seen in Christchurch, in New Zealand, the judge (Mr J. L. Stevenson. of Christchurch) said. ■ These were the type of *a«p that were wanted to the h.gh country. The wool, was to better order than what It sometimes was. he Said. The champion ram, shewn by Mr J. R. lOdhitoter, was a big. strong u, Leicester.—Although I th* rams were in very good condition, the judge (Mr F. P. Callaghan, of Palmerston) said he was a little disappointed with the numbers as compared with last year- There were several defective mouthed rams, and most of them were not carrying a good type of Border wool. Most had very good heads and did well, and their condition was excellent. Ewes ware very well brought out, th* carcases and conformation were very good, while wool on some of them was dlsappototing said the judge of the owa* (Mr J. A. Miller, ot Outram). “I think it is necessary to look after the wool, in view' of the crossing which is going on with other breeds.” he said. English Leicester—The champion and reserve champion English Leicester sheep were outstanding and the ewes with lambs at foot were quite difficult to judge, said Mr R. Reid, from Darfield, who also judged the Ryelands. An outstanding class was the ewe hogget* and th* ram hoggets, he said. Ryeland.—Mr Reid said he was disappointed in the numbers of Ryelands entered, but the winning sheep was up to the best standard seen at Ashburton. Dorsel Horn—There were quite a lot of outstanding sheep in the Dorset Horn classes, said the judge (Mr T. W. Stephenson, of Riccaiton). This applied more so to the ewe* than to the rams, he said. Hampshire—Judged by Mr Stephenson, this cljiss also had some good sheep. In both sections. he said, there were a few not "up to scratch.” but the general standard was good, with th* ehampion and reserve champion in both classes up to metropolitan standard. Suffolk—Although the championship was awarded to a young ram, the judge (Mr J. Brand, of Temuka) considered It was a well-brought out aheep and well worth the prize. Generally, he said the standard was good. South Suffolk.—Judging of the

Smith Suffolk* bad, been quit* difficult. Mr Brand said, although he thought the sheep were just dark enough in colouring and did not need to ffes any darker. Dorset Hora—Considering the wet season, th* majority <rf the Dorset Horns were well brought out and the champion ram was a very good specimen, well up to metropolitan standards, the judge (Mr V. A. Davey, of Temuka) said. With several classes ever, judging had been quite difficult Fat Sheep and Lambs.—The quality wa* very good and up to standard, the judge (Mr if. Farquhar, of Christchurch) said. However, he expressed disappointment that there were net more entries. Wool Classes—There wa* the odd defect shotving in some of the wool, the judge (Mr L. E. Franklin, of Christchurch) said, but th* entries were quite good considering the season. Compared with last year, the condition of the wool was better than last year. He would like to see more entries, even If fanners did not consider their wool quite up to the standard. “It gives a farmer an opportunity to see where the defects are,” Mr Franklin said. Horses The top horses would hold their own throughout New Zealand, but unfortunately, the manners of a great many “left a lot to be desired.” the judge of the hacks, hunters and the F.BJ. event (Mr J. L. Loe. of Ward) said. However, the general, overall standard was good. Miss J. Lemon's Pimms. the champion hack of the show, was outstanding on the day and Mr Loe said he had no difficulty in selecting It. The F.E.I. events were very good and In this section, Mr Loe thought the ponies were particularly good. Mrs M. Craven, from Blenheim, judged the small ponies and said the top ponies were very good, capable of competing anywhere in the South Island. Th* rider* and ponies were both well turned out. “The children art to be congratulated on their presentation of their ponies,” said Mrs G. F. Cresswell, Of Blenheim, who judged the other section of the ponies. “In which case.” she added, "some credit must go to the pony clubs which have encouraged riding and kept up the children’s enthusiasm." She thought they eould hold their own in any New Zealand show. In the trotting stock. th* judge (Mr D. G. Jones, of Templeton) said he was not terribly impressed and said th* time of the year could have something to do with the classes which were weak. The champion was up to standard, but the reserve champion was not quite up to expectations. although judging it and those below had been quite close. Cattle AU cattle in the milking Shorthorn classes were good and weU brought out for this time of the season, said Mr F. G. Hibbard, of Rangiora. who was judge of the class. The champion cow of W. M. Skevington and the champion bull of J. C. Laing were both very good. The class was up to show standard, although some were not big enough. The young stock was in very good Order, said Mr Hibbard. Mr D. F. Watson, of Highbank, judge of the boys’ and girls’ agricultural section, said that the animals were very well turned out. The competitors had put much time In handling the animals, he said.

The champion cow of Portis Bros., was quite outstanding and would hold its own anywhere, said Mr J. Marshall, of Edendale. who judged the Jersey cattle section. The class was good and strong and he was quite agreeably surprised by the standard. The Champion yearling heifer of Portis Bro*, was *n animal which was well brought out. The two-year-eld bull entered by D. J. Boel, which wa* th* champion bull, ihowed good breeding character, said Mr Marehafl. Pig* For a country show th* pigs in th* show were of quit* good standard, said Mr E Chilton, of Belfast, who judged th* pig*. The champion awards in each section were fine specimens of their breed and were good enough to be entered in any main show. Mr Chilton praised the pig pavilion. Commenting on th* dog trials. Mr P. Newton, of Wliiterock. said th* sheep proved very difficult to handle on the day end only experienced dogs eould cope successfully with them. Result* were— CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS Merino—Rem, ?. R.
