First Grade Begins

The openinc round of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s first grade inter-club competition at Wilding Park on Saturday produced close matches. Two contests were decided on games when the teams had won eight matches each and two others were won by 9 matches to 7. Last year's winner. Woolston beat Waimairi by 9 matches to 7. but last year's runner-up. Elmwood, went down to Cashmere by 105 games to 118. Results were:— Section 1 Cashmere beat Elmwood by 118 games to 103; University beat South Christchurch by 9 matches to 7; Woolston beat Waimairi by 9 matches to 7: Avonside beat Fendalton by 15 matches to 1. Section II North Linwood beat Opawa by 100 games to 97; Spreydon beat Beckenham- by 14 matches to 2: Barrington beat Shirley by 11 matches to 5; Riccarton Domain beat Avonside II by 10 matches to 6.
