Captain Carmichael Retires '•The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON. Oct. 27. The New Zealand Army’s former chief Instructor for the Corps of Royal New Zealand Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Captain J. M Carmichael, of Levin, retired this month. Captain Carmichael enlisted in May, 1942, and was posted to the 3rd Division. 2nd N.Z.E.F. He served in the Pacific till 1944 when he returned to New Zealand as a sergeant He was posted to the N.Z. Temporary Staff in 1945 and went to Waiouru to the field vehicle maintenance section In 1947, as a warrant officer, first class, he went to the Corps of the Royal New Zealand Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Three years after transferring to the Regular Force as a sergeant in 1948, Captain Carmichael was appointed chief instructor, R.NZ.E.M.E. School, Waiouru. He was responsible for introducing Army apprentices to trade training arid in 1956 was given control of the
workshops at Linton. Captain Carmichael was due to retire last year but stayed on at the Army’s request for an extra year.
