Representatives Visit Refinery Site

WHANGAREI, Oct. 29. Representatives of one of the three international' firms asked to tender for the Marsden Point oil refinery paid a quick visit to the site and Whangarei. The men are Messrs S. J. Harrison and B. Rodin, Americans from the Australian branch of Procon, LtdGreat Britain. They were in Whangarei to see the site and make a preliminary survey of local labour and sub-contracting resources. Talks were held with Whangarei Harbour Board representatives and the resident engineer of the Ministry of Works (Mr G. P. Keller). The visitors left for Auckland yesterday afternoon to catch an aircraft back to Australia tonight. They are expected to return for a full survey within a few weeks. Representatives of the other two major construction firms are also expected to view tbe field in the near future. These firms are Becthal International, LtdLondon, and Lummas-Werks-poor, The Hague, Holland. The three firms have been asked by the oil refinery company to have their tenders in by the end of December and a contract win be placed before March 1 next year. Another visitor yesterday was Mr W. C. Holiday, an
engineer for the Whessoe Company, of Darlington, County Durham, England, which has built many of the oil storage tanks in New Zealand. Mr Holliday was making investigations on the spot concerning tendering for building storage tanks for the refinery. He left for the south at the end of the day, will return to Australia tomorrow, and will go back to Britain next week. A brief visit was also paid yeaterday by the general manager of tbe New Zealand Oil Refinery Company (Mr J. Carney) and the managing director (Mr L. G Hucks).
