EXTRA DUTY ON SPORTS GEAR

Cricket Council To Protest

The New Zealand Cricket Council will protest to the Minister of Customs against increased duties on the imports of cricket material next year. If necessary, a deputation will also be sent to wait on the Minister.

Saturday’s meeting of the board of control took this action after considering a copy of a letter from the Wellington Cricket Association to the Minister. This liter protested that the duty on pads, for instance, was increased from 22J per cen.. to 32J per cent. Duty on other cricket material was increased by 5 per cent, or 2J per cent, Mr K. L. Sandford (North Island minor associations) told the meeting the increased duty would bring the price of an Imported cricket bat up to £B. Members agreed that this was out of all proportion to the intrinsic value of the article. The department's move was striking not only at the adult cricketers, but at schoolboys, too, said the chairman (Mr JL. Kerr). Mr Kerr referred to the cost to a young boy taking up the game, and said that these increased charges would deter players from buying their own t-ir, would handicap dubs, and may drive players away from the game.
