BRIQUETTING WORKS

German Plant For Ngakawau (N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 27. An order was being placed by the Mines Department with the German firm Koppern and Company for the supply of the briquetting plant for Ngakawau, said the Minister of Mines (Mr Shand) today. “The placing of the order has been delayed pending a visit of the managing director of the company to New Zealand to agree to certain alterations to the plant considered necessary to handle New Zealand coal satisfactorily,” he said. Koppern and Company have supplied many briquetting plants, not only in Germany, but also to other parts of the world, and the plant to be supplied for Ngakawau will be of the latest design. “Briquetting plants are normally manufactured to the requirement of the buyer; they are not a line which can be bought off the shelf and Kopperns estimate that the plant will be manufactured and ready for shipment from Germany at the end of August, 1962. “While I am naturally disappointed that the plant will not be ready for next winter, it is expected it will be installed and ready for use by the winter of 1953,” said Mr Shand.
