Pigeon Problem

Pigeons are one of London’s problems, even though they are the delight of sightseers in Trafalgar square and on BL Paul’s Cathedral. The pigeons number thousands, most of them commuting to the suburbs at night Their increase is helped by office staffs feeding them in the open city spaces, and putting scraps of food for them on window ledges. A firm' of pigeon catchers has been employed to limit their numbers, so that the pleasure they give to residents and visitors is not outweighed by the nuisance they cause. Last year, the firm trapped and killed humanely about 2400. Its trappers had to work at night, because during the daytime Londoners sided with the pigeons, and frightened them away from the traps.—London, October 19.
