Railway Property
Sir,—We have in Christchurch a very fine new railway station of which we may be justly proud, but a deplorable eyesore between Manchester and Colombo streets —ramshackle, derelict, ratinfested decrepit buildings, a slum area which apparently the Railways Department is loth to dismantle, although the station has now been completed almost a year. It was reported early this year that the area between the station and the Colombo street overbridge would be cleared and laid out with gardens and a motor parking area for staff and public. Perhaps the Government refuses to sanction the expense and, like the new Post Office for the city it will be started 15 years hence.—Yours, etc., RIP VAN WINKLE October 18, 1961. (The district traffic manager of the Railways Department, Christchurch (Mr E C , . Br > tt .onden) said: “All the old buildings referred to have been sold for removal and action by the purchasers is expected shortly. Except , to gardens, wmeh have never been contemplated, your correspondent states the department’s intention correctly. No obstacles to the scheme are anticipated.”]
