SENSATIONAL FINISH
Horse Careers Into Crowd (N.Z. Press Arsoe-aPoo: ROTORUA, October 22. There was a sensational ending to the Hack Hurdles, the opening event at the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunt Clubs meeting at Arawa Park, Rotorua yesterday. The riderless Count Gooch, which had fallen at the first fence, jumped the last fence almost abreast of the winner, Tarqi, but then careered outwards. He almost pushed Tarqi over the picket fence along the birdcage. Count Gooch then halfhurdled the birdcage fence, and crashed through another fence into the crowd, sending people sprawling sideways. Two persons were taken by ambulance to Rotorua Hospital, but after being X-rayed they were allowed to leave, A bystander grabbed Count Gooch’s head and prevented further damage. The whole field, which included some experienced jumpers, gave a shocking display. Six horses fell. This was the first time that red-painted hurdles had been used at Rotorua and jockeys were loud in condemning them after the race.
