Bowls Papanui Club's Two-Day Jubilee Tournament

The Papanui Bowling club’s jubilee celebrations began on Saturday with a two-day tournament open to past and present members. There was a good muster of past members. and the teams were made up by the club's match committee. Eighteen fours took part, and at the end of play on Saturday the fours for today's games were divided' into two sections, those in the A section to play for the major prize. At the end of the games on Saturday there were two fours with four wins, four with three wins, fotlr with two wins, and eight with one win. The winners of four and three games automatically went into the A section. Two of the winners of two games required to make up the A section of eight fours were selected on the aggregate points scored on Saturday. The green was a little heavy, and some of the players had great difficulty in getting their bowls • up to the head, especially on the longer heads. At times some excellent bowling was ■seen. The wind at times played a few tricks with the bowls. R. Bond, a member for many years, was just as much at home on the green as he was in helping to erect the pavilion, for he was one of the two skips to come through the day without loss. He was never troubled in his first game, when he beat R. Nichol. 19-6. In his next game, against R. Jefferys, he had to fight hard over the concluding stages, which was played with a time limit of an hour and a half. After leading 8-5 on the ninth head, he dropped a six to Jefferys. but on the next three heads he moved into the lead again with two singles and a four. On the last head. Jefferys held one shot to lose 14-12. In his third game Bond had another close call, 12-10, against J. Hool, and he had little to spare in his last game, in which he beat S. Kruse 1513. A. Wotton. the other four winner, had reasonably comfortable wins, beating G. Thomas 16-8, C. Adams 13-6. E. Foster 15-11, and F. Spencer 15-11. There was a change of fortunes in the game between W. Jones and R. Mann in ’ the closing stages. On the sixth head, Jones led 6-2, but Mann equalised on the next ’ head. Jones regained the lead, 9-8, on the eleventh • head. On the next two heads ' Mann jumped right into the lead with a two on each, but on the last two heads, Jones ’ took two on each, to win 1312. Jones in his next game had a comfortable win over 1 A. Bond, but in his third . game he fought all the way to beat J. O’Rourke 11-10. ’ In his last game he lost to

G. Thomas. 13-11. This was Thomas’s first win. Mann, after losing his first game, had a 20-7 win over Donovan and a 14-8 win •gainst R. Nichol In his last game he won 12-10 after a . hard fight with Jefferys Jeffreys won only one game, but he caused other skips some anxious moments. R. Ritchie, who won his first three games, was a little unlucky not to win four. In his last game he played C. Adams, who after winning his first game failed in the next two. With one head left to play. Ritchie was 11-8 up, but on the last head Adams took four shots. E. Foster, after two good wins, lost his third game by four, and won his last, against A. Trotter, 15-13. After the games today the
