GOLF Surprises Mark Play For Provincial Title

The qualifying stroke rounds on Saturday and t»ie first two rounds of wiAtch. play yesterday in the Canterbury amateur championship at the Waimari Beach club’s course were full of surprises, none greater than the defeat of K. D. Foxton by his Russley clubmate, R. K. Atkinson. Foxton was a firm favourite to win the title after his splendid play on Saturday—when he headed the qualifiers and equalled the course record in his afternoon round—and jesterday morning, when he disposed of his first-round opponent after 14 holes bv playing sub par golf. B. A. Colquhoun, the Freyberg Rosebowl play er, G. D. Sutherland, the promising young competitor from Oamaru, and L. A. Watson, a former Canterbury champion, were all eliminated in the match play, and among those vyho failed to qualify were R. E. Clements, C. J. Ward, and B. L. Clegg.

The course was an excellent test of skILL Admittedly, tne fairways were burnt brown, but the greens were fine, fast, but true, and extreme accuracy was called for in cnippmg. Tnose who reached the semi-finals of the championsnip were Atkinson. A. R. Timms, the noted Otago player and former New Zealand representative, D. F. Williamson, and J. G. Scott This morning Timms will play Scott, and Atkinson will meet Williamson. Foxton handled the course in exemplary fashion in his second stroke round on Saturday. From the first tee to the eighteenth hole he hit the ball well and was rarely in difficulty. When his ball did find an awkward lie—as it did at the twelfth hole—luck was usually with him. In this instance his drive ended behind a bank surmounted by a row of pines. He had to play his second shot away from the green but the ball curved in flight and ran back in the desired direction. It was a jubilant Foxton who sank his putt for an eagle three. At the turn Foxton was two under par with a score of 33; he covered the last nine holes in 38 for a gross 68. He succeeded with several good putts, notably one of 25ft and two of 12ft. Foxton's score equalled the record set two years ago by D. Watt. Exciting Finish Foxton's match with Atkinson was one of fluctuating fortunes, and produced an exciting finish with Foxton. I down, playing the eighteenth with all the skill and power at his command. But Atkinson responded well under the pressure to halve the hole and win the match. Atkinson was 2 up after six holes but faltered sufficiently to let Foxton square the match at the turn. Three putts on the eighth green and a drive which drifted to the left and landed in a bunker on the ninth were sufficient to lose Atkinson the advantage. He won the tenth, however, but Foxton fought back to be 1 up playing the fifteenth. Here, his putt was not firm enough to gain him a half, and a poor chip cost him the seventeenth hole. Foxton produced an inspired effort at the eighteenth. A spanking drive and a good approach left him with a putt of 10ft to win the hole and save the match His putt was in line, but the ball lipped the cup and Atkinson had won, 1 up. Foxton's fellow Rosebowl player. Colquhoun, was at a psychological disadvantage in the early part of his game with Scott. Colquhoun played the first three holes in regulation figures, only to find himself 3 down. Scott's succession of birdies ended with Colquhoun winning the fourth hole, but it was not until after 12 holes that he was able to capture the lead. He won three holes quickly and, putting for a birdie at the seventeenth. hit the cup from 35ft away but the ball bounced out. Another bold putt by Colquhoun from the edge of the eighteenth green met the same fate, but Scott calmly holed a 10ft putt for a birdie and squared the match. The game ended at the nineteenth green when Scoff, from 9ft. holed his putt while Colquhound. from 13ft missed by a fraction. Some clean and powerful driving by R. B. Townsend enabled him to be all square with Timms after six holes But thereafter the Otago man gradually asserted his superi-

orfty. He was 1 up at the turn and then won the tenth, eleventh, thirteenth and fourteenth holes to finish the match. At this stage he was two under par and Townsend was five over. Timms and Townsend played the last four holes to complete the round, Timms securing an eagle at the sixteenth and finishing the 18 holes in the standard scratch score of 70. Not all the highlights were provided by the seniors, however. C. M. Blight, in the junior section, missed an albatross at the five-bogey twelfth hole by only five inches: it nevertheless gave him the utmost satisfaction to be putting for an eagle from such a distance. In the intermediate section, two of the best performers were R. S. Peate and C. V. Stokes, both products of the Golf Foundation. They won their first round games comcomfortably and proved their mettle by succeeding again in the second round. Peate, indeed, eliminated the leading qualifier. J. A Hansen. 1 up. by virtue of some excellent putting. He was in consistently good touch around the greens and on the eighteenth holed a 30ft putt to win 1 up. By contrast, Stokes was not putting well, but his drives and shots to the green were well executed. Playing S. B. Blight, he was 2 down after six holes but squared the match at the ninth and went on to win, 4 and 2. Results were: — MATCH PLAY Senior First Round—K. D. Foxton beat W. McGavock. 5 and 4; R. K.
