REPORT ON BASES

“No Move For Removal” (NJ!. Prett Association) WELLINGTON. October 22 The Commissioner-General for South-east Asia (Lord Selkirk), at present in Wellington, has declined to comment on the possibility that British base* in Singapore might no longer be able to operate after the merger between Singapore and Malaya. A cable report this week said the Prime Minister of Malaya iTunku Abdul Rahman) had won the initial support of his Parliament to go to London and work out an agreement with Britain over using Singapore bases for S.E.A.T.O. commitments. Lord Selkirk said the Tunku was going to Britain for a meeting with Mt Macmillan and it would be wrong for him to anticipate what would transpire. He said he knew of no move to remove the bases from Singapore. The merger of Malaya and Singapore was a natural evolution of the area, he said.
