IRISH SOCIETIES HOLD NATIONAL FEIS IN CITY

Irish society members from throughout New Zealand met in Christchurch during the week-end for the annual festival of the New Zealand Federation of Irish National Clubs and Societies. Membership oZ 'the scsietieg has increased since the last feis was held in Christchurch three years ago, and there were record entries*. The events included dancing, singing, oratory, elocution. Gaelic football, hurling, and camogie. The ma n event in the celebrations was the official open, ing by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr H. P. Smith) of the Christchurch Irish National Society’s new hall in St. Asaph street. The society's pipe band led a procession from the Christchurch Railway Station to the hall. The patron of the society (Mr J. Kelleher) said that in building the hall members ot the society had givin more than'loo week-ends of voluntary labour. Other speakers included the president of the society (Mr M. MaunseU), Mr W. Cunningham, Mr R. Turner, representing the Hibernian society, and the national secretary of the federation (Mr L. O’Connell). More than 500 dancers attended a dance in the hall on Saturday night and a social yesterday was also well attended. The competitions will be continued today and the final of the football will be played at Rugby Park. This game will be followed by the finals

Car Hits Pole.— Two persons suffered leg injuries when a car struck a pole in Hills road, near Edgeware road, about 2.15 a.m. yesterday. They are Mr Karl Millan. of 107 Domain terrace, and Miss Carol Lee, of Prebbleton. Both were treated at Christchurch Hospital and sent home.
