Tara’s Pride WinsKaritane Handicap Handily

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, October 22. Tara’s Pride was backed as though unbeatable in the Karitane Handicap at Trentham on Saturday and won handily to come through the meeting unbeaten in two starts. He carried £5852 of a win pool of £9656 10s and paid £1 7s for a win.

Mr C. W. Ansford’s Pride of Kildare colt is unlikely to race again until the Auckland Cup meeting. He was slightly shin sore on Saturday and took longer to establish his superiority than be had done in the Wellesley Stakes a week earlier. He was alongside Orokawa in the lead to the straight. They came to the furlong still abreast, with L. K. Tinsley shaking the whip alongside Tara’s Pride head. Orokawa weakened inside the furtong and Kapok beat him for second, but was not good enough to make a run at the winner. The Riccarton-tnained Nell, one of two runners for J. E. Shaw’s stable. improved from the ruck for a promising fourth well clear of the others. Harvest Fair was a moderate fifth clear of Rely, Last Mate, and Aloft. Arawana Wins First-day form proved of good value in the Rimu Hurdles, in which Arawana and Lord Pilate battled it out. Arawana, third on the first day, ran the race out a little too strongly for Lord Pilate, which had won the Glen Hurdles. The winner and runner-up jumped better than they had on the first day, when Arawana lost a winning chance at the second last hurdle. Hopes for a South Island victory ran high when Thumper challenged Dinosaur for the lead going to the tost jump.- But the Riccarton jumper tired in the last furlong and finished in a gap of two and a half lengths behind Lord Pilate. Dionosaur, the leader of the home turn, was inches back fourth, two lengths clear of Diavolo. Easy For Marco Bank Marco Bank showed marked ability to win the Trial Stakes after a stow start. It was tote when his big run carried him up to a challenging position, yet he won by a length from Fair Symbol. This was Marco Bank’s second start; His first was at Masterton where he tost his chance at the start. Fair Symbol, a stablemate of the brilliant Commanding, beat Prince Judah by a nose tor second. Fair Symbol finished in the middle of the track, and Prince Judah drifted away from the rails under pressure after trailing on the inside. Arlington, Challenge, and the favourite, Dandenong, were the beat of the others. Dandenong had his chance but was unable to quicken. He was sweating profusely before the race. Waitaria Gets Up Waitaria, unlucky in at least one of his races earlier this season, had rich compensation in the Heretaunga Handicap. The Gisborne-trained High Forest gelding finished gamely from the turn and beat the Waikato hack stayer, Special Terans, by a head. Special Terms looked as if he would win when he made a sharp run to the front on the home turn. But Waitaria caught him dose to the post. Hesitate, another Waikato hack, was third at good odds two lengths and a quarter back. Then there were heads to John Robie and Timna. Timna had a trailing run most of the way, but did not make much progress in the straight. Next home were Bright Summer, Air Step and Ours. Glendale, the favourite, was feeling the ground in bis preliminary, and faded to eleventh after pacemaking. Sadar the second favourite, was a disappointing fifteenth. Chef, the third choice, was tenth. Won Soundly Rio Rapido, brilliantly ridden by B. X Langford,

dashed through on the rails going on to the furlong in the Belmont Hack Handicap and won soundly by a length. Rio Rapido is not easy to rid-e because of his tendency to lug in and that cost him a winning chance in the corresponding race on the first day of the meeting. This time Langford managed to get Rio Rapido on to the raids about three places back. He got the run through when the favourite. Cool, tired in the straight, and gave none of the others a chance in the, tost furlong. Rio Rapido is trained at Trentham but there was a strong South Island flavour about his win. He is owned by Mr and Mrs C. G. Tansey. of Christchurch, and is trained by E. J. Shaw, who was formerly at Washdyke. The next best to Rio Rapido was Ataarangi, which made most of the pace. Maitauenga, a winner at sensational odd® at the Wellington winter meeting, showed he could run on flrm ground as well by finishing third. He outflnished Cool, which had a trailing run to the straight. Voracious and Gay Duchess were the best of the others. Lola was the best of the South Island hacks. She tired to eighth.
