PAKISTAN TEST

England’s Hard Day

(N .Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) LAHORE (Pakistan), Oct. 21. It was a day of sweat and toil for the English cricket team today when Pakistan scored 254 for three wickets on the first day of the first test at Pakistan lost its first two wickets in the first half hour for 24 runs, but in the remaining five hours added a further 230 for the loss of only one more wicket. The Oxford Blue, Javed Burki, completed his first test century just before the close of play. Burki and Saeed Ahmed added 138 for the third wicket, and then Mustaq Mohammed helped Burki in an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 92. The fast bowler, White, In his first appearance, had a splendid attacking opening spell. He had the Pakistan captain, Imtiaz Ahmed, caught fit the wicket off his eleventh ball, and shortly after knocked Hanif Mohammad’s off stump out of the ground to give him two wickets for eight run in four overs. Found The Edge The only other attacking bowling came from the legspinner, Barber, who settled into an accurate length, and occasionally found an edge—quite a feat on ‘he dead pitch. Saeed and Burki, with contrasting batting styles, were the men who rescued Pakistan from its bad start. Saeed, who has been extremely successful in tests, is a batsman with supple wrists, and is never afraid to flash the bat at the ball. As a result, he looks a little vulnerable, but on these placid pitches it is likely to bring him plenty of runs. Saeed’s 74 came in 180 minutes, and included 12 fours. Burki, sure in defence, has so far batted 290 minutes for his 103 not out, and has hit 13 fours. Mustaq Mohammed has been at the wicket 92 minutes for his 46 not out.
