YACHTING G. MANDER’S FRENZY WINS S.I. TITLE

The South Island R class yachting championship held on Lyttelton harbour daring the weekend was won by G. 8. Mander, of the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club, in Freniy—a boat he designed and built himself. Twenty craft sailed in the contest, which was being conducted for the first time. The handicap event, conducted in conjunction with the tiUe racing, was won by Tranquil (M. Boyd, Waimakariri Sailing Club). Mander. who was placed third in the national Leknder Trophy series at Auckland last season, won with two first placings and a fifth. His main competition came from F. G. Simpson, of the Christchurch Yacht Club, whose three second places gave him the position of runner-up. Simpson and P. J. Lawrence (for’ard hand) had a 25sec lead on Mander halfway through the last race yesterday afternoon but lost their position when a rogue sheet prevented their spinnaker from setting on a vital run. Simpson's boat. Sari, had had its rudder assembly wrecked and the boat itself became swamped and had to be beached at Charteris Bay the day before when it capsized short of the finishing line in a club race. It took part in the last races of the contest only after having been worked on by Its skipper and crew for much of Saturday night and Sunday morning. Mander owed his win in no small measure to the nearperfect spinnaker work of his crew—A. M. Holland, of Stewart's Gully. Two Waimakariri dinghies nearly caused an upset in the contest. They were Fantastic, sailed by the brothers G. J. and C. J. Cooke, and G Wilson's Tempest, which had a 15-year-old boy, R. Greenaway, as crew. Sternless Craft Completed only two weeks ago. Fantastic was an object of interest among competing yachtsmen and spectators, for it had no stern. The hull was built by D. Harrison to his own Query-type lines and finished by the Cookes, who set in a false deck to provide buoyancy below the waterline. The hole where normally would be found the stern allows freedom of movement for kite booms and lets water drain out instantaneously. After being third in the first race and winning the second in spectacular style. Fantastic led on the points table when the third and final race of the title series began. When in a good position for a high placing—possibly a third—Fantastic capsized and finished out the coarse without setting a kite, coming across the line seventh. Two Hulls Pierced Three contest boats were put out of action by accidents, two of them serious. The hulls at the Christchurch dinghy Pirouette and the Canterbury club clinker ply Retort were holed In collisions. Pirouette’s moulded hull was pierced In a collusion with Fantastic at the Charteris Bay Club’s opening event on Saturday afternoon. It was being skippered by its regu- !? r L. wales, as it owner, H. England, was away from Christchurch for the Labour Day week-end. D. Harrison's Retort was stove In along its starboard side In an accident with A. W. Shields's Vision towards the end of the last race yesterday. Retort was later disqualified. The third boat which was unable to see out the contest was M. C. Hines’S Gazelle (formerly owned by the Cookes), which had a step destroyed after its mast had gone over the side after the parting of a splice in a shroud. A contingent of R-class dinghies from Timaru drew praise from Christchurch yachtsmen because of their fine finish In hulls and rigs. J. Dickson and I. Carey, in Rebel 11. were the only placed yachtsmen from Timaru. J. Shanks's Frequent sailed near the head of the fleet—in fact, he led Mander for part of the first race, only to throw away points by disqualification as a result of taking a mark on the wrong side—and its performance compared favourably with Rebel n. The prize tor the contest winners was a shield which was presented to Mander and Holland by Mr John Woods, ths donor, at a function after the sailing of the final race. Official placing! and points tn the contest were as follows: Frenzy iG. S. Mander and A. M. Holland, Canterbury club). 233, 1; Sari (F. G. Simpson and P. J. Lawrence.
