A. HYSLOP RETURNS
Undecided On Future
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct 22. No definite plans have been made by A. Hyslop, the 1961 ‘‘driver to Europe," as to whether his future will be in Grand Prix motor racing or with his farm in Hawke’s Bay. He returned on Saturday with his mechanic, W. Hannah, of Havelock North. They have been away for seven months. Hyslop said that an overseas racing team had made an offer to him to drive a formula I car on the 1962 International Grand Pr x circuit. He was not at Liberty to name the team. "I don’t know yet whether I will accept the offer," he said. "My plans are still undecided.” Having his first season in single-seat racing cars. Hyslop had an extremely successful year, driving a formula junior Lotus 20. He said that his greatest honour and thrill came in the Le Mans when, with another New Zealander, Holme, he drove to a class victory in a tiny FiatAba rth. This was the first New Zealand team to compete in the 24-hour classic. The 850 c.c. Fiait-Abarth covered more miles than the winning Jaguar did in 1952. Hyslop said that the competition in overseas motor racing was much stronger than in New Zealand but the standard of driving in New Zealand was excellent compared with other countries. He said that formula junior racing would be ideal for New Zealand conditions and drivers. AH cars were much the same size and would produce a better standard of competition. Before deciding whether to give up motor racing, Hyslop will compete on the New Zealand circuit in 1962. He will be driving a formula I Cooper Climax in the Ardmore Grand Prix.
