SOUND SALE FOR FRIESIAN BULLS

Dairy bulls met a varying sale yesterday when the Canterbury Combined Breeders’ Association held its twentieth annual sale at the Addington Show Grounds. Moderate entry of Friesian bulU sold at much improved values, but there was a dull sale for Jerseys and milking Shorthorns,, and only one Ayrshire was forward. There was a smaller entry and 38 of the 53 bulls offered were sold under the hammer, compared with 47 sold out of 82 offered at last year’s sale. Before the sale the president of the association (Mr C. Mannings) said that with the increased use ot artificial insemination the onus was on breeders to make sure the bulls they sent forward to the sale were of the highest quality. The Friesian section of the sale sold buoyantly in relation to the depressed prices for the other breeds. The nine bulls all sold readily and averaged 108gns. There was also some life in the bidding which was absent for the others. Last year there were 16 out of 21 sold at an average of just under Signs. Top price of 2Osgns for the first prize-winning year, ling was a record for the sale. This was paid for Pitcairns P. T. Felix, offered by E. L. Adams, Brookside, and it was bought for A. and P. Wilkinson of Parnassus.

The top bull in ths open class, Lucemvale Johan, was sold by E J. Stalker. Greenpark. to S. Lancaster of Springston at 135gns. Mr Stalker also had a sale at 120gns for P. Thian, of Lakeside. His average for four bulls was JlOgns. Last year's top price was lOOgns and the top average was E. L. Adams's 78gns for tour. This year he had one other sale at 90gns. Generally, the Friesian bulls were brought out better and there were some excellent production records in the catalogued pedigrees. After a sluggish opening with quite a number of pausings the market for Jersey bulls found its level well below last year's prices. Out of 34 bulls offered 25 were sold at auction at an average price of Slfgns, Last year the average price of 39|gns was gained for 24 sold out of an offering of 29 Top price this year was 62 gns which was paid for Clover Nook Timothy offered on account of H. J. Hurford and Son. Irwell. The bull was bought by S. and H. Sheldon, of Southbrook. Portis Bros., of Oamaru, who sold the top price bull last year at 65gns. sold one at o7gns. The next highest price of 44gns was realised bv a bull from H. J. Dalzell, kaikoura. Of the nine milking Shorthorn bulls offered only three were sold at STjgns. 30gns and 25gns and averaged 30.9 gns. Last year four averaged just under 42gns and ranged from 32 i gns to 52|gns The three were sold bv H D Hurford. Irwell, who ’ received the top price last year. Only one Ayrshire bull was offered and this made 39 gns for its vendor. Mrs L B Willan. Puaha. Little River. Last year there were two Ayrghires which realised 571 gns and fiOgns. The judges for the show which was held before the sale were Messrs F. W. Fiecken (Friesian), R W. Frost (Jersey), C. Mannings (Milking Shorthorn* and W. C. Miller (Ayrshire).
