The taxi then drove on and dropped off the girl, who was charged ss. When the witness’s home was reached he alighted and was.charged 6s. Harold Benjamin Barker, a traffic officer of the Christdiurch Csty Council, said that he had measured the distance travelled by the taxi and it was three miles and a fifth. A sum of 15s was charged: the correct charge was 6s 6d. Mr Polson said that the case was rather unusual in that the defendant had no recollection of the facts of the case. At peak hours it was apperently the practice of some drivers to take some pasengers on together. It was lust another case of multiple hiring. In this case the passengers had made no complaint and Rains had taken this as tacit consent to the use of the taxi in the manner Stated Rains said in evidence that be could not remember the particular incident. He said he was ait the time not conversant with the rules about the driving of taxis. He had had 12 months’ experience as an owner-driver at this time. FAILED TO GIVE WAY Douglas Elliot Scott (Mr N. G. Hattaway) was fined £2 on a charge of failing to give way at a give-way sign. He pleaded not guilty. B. Watson, a traffic officer employed by the dhristchurch City Council, said that at .4.46 pm. on June 25 he saw a car driven by Scott along Edgeware road fail to give way to a vehicle on the left at Cranford street. There were give-way signs at this point. When stopped Scott at first did not seem to know he had to give way to the left at toe signs. He later maintained that there was no traffic on his left, said the witness. . Scott said that he had nearly stopped at the intersection to allow a bus to turn into Cranford street. The only other vehicle was a small brown one some distance up the road. He said that his wife and family were with him in the car, and none of them had seen the car to which it was alleged he had failed to give way. The Magistrate said toere was no reason to doubt toe traffic officer, but it waa quit* obvious that Scott believed his story was true.
