NEW POWER CHARGES

Increase From October 1 From last Sunday consumers served by the Christchurch Municipal Electricity Department pay more for power to contribute an estimated extra £134.182 to the department’s 1961-62 revenue. The increase in power charges was fixed by the City Council in July when official advice was received that the Government would increase the price for bulk power under an agreement with the supply authorities. The new charges applied from October 1, but they would be apportioned so that power used before last Sunday would be charged at the old rates. Mr G. H. Battersby, the general manager of the M.E.D., explained yesterday. Meter readers have been issued with ready reckoners and will be able to calculate the different rates of payment. In fixing the increases, the council received a report from its electricity committee saying that the average revenue a unit sold would increase by 11.5 per cent., and that the increase had been spread as uniformly as possible over the different classes of consumers—domestic. £85.876: commercial, £12,076; industrial, £36,230.
