HAREWOOD JETS

Airport Aids To Be Requested (N Z. Pres* Association) NELSON, Oct. 5. The Minister in Charge of Tourist and Health Resorts (Mr Eyre) will be asked to request the Minister in charge of Civil Aviation (Mr MfcAlpine) to provide the necessary navigational aids for a pure jet service to Christchurch in order to put New Zealand on the main air route of the Pacific. This was decided today by delegates to the annual conference of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association in passing a Christchurch City Council remit. Lack of trained personnel in jet-navigational aids and the need for a 300-bed hotel were the main obstacles to introducing *a pure jet service to Christchurch Airport, the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) told the delegates. Direct Link “By providing a direct link with Britain, Europe, the United States, and Australia, with a pure jet service, our overseas exchange earnings would be increased and the South Island tourist industry would be stimulated," said Mr Manning. He said he realised that to train navigation personnel took about four years, and that at present there was no new, modem hotel in sight. However, these obstacles had to be overcome if Christchurch was not to be left isolated in the coming jet age Messrs W. P. Glue (Harbour boards), and J. I Colligan (Waimairi County Council) supported this view. Mr Colligan said a seven-acres-and-a-half site was being cleared for a new £500,000 hotel barely a mile from the airport. “I don’t say it will be a 300-bed hotel, but it will be the most up-to-date in New Zealand," he said
