A Point Of Geography
Sir, —These has recently been shown in Christchurch a film about a trip supposed to have been made by a naval officer to the source of the Wanganui river. But the cameraman, at least, apparently got only as far as the hot springs by Ketetahi blowhole (not shown) on the northern side of Tongariro, within the Waikato catchment. The watershed between the Waikato and Wanganui is a little further west. Further round the north-west face of Tongariro, the highest channels of the Wanganui river run steeply down nearly parallel courses. They are fed by rain and melting snow, not by hot springs. This should be clear to all who can go there. Also good maps are available of the Tongariro National Park.—Yours, etc., ARTHUR LUSH. October 3, 1961.
